New here? The basics of hair toppers and wigs

The world of hair replacement can be confusing to begin with, we’ve all been there! I know going through hair loss is very stressful without the added hurdles of trying to figure out what topper or wig might work for you when you’ve never seen or touched one in person. Below is a list of basic questions you might have, explained as simply as possible!

What is a hair topper?

A hair topper is a hairpiece that covers the ‘top’ portion of the head (hence the name!) and secures down with a front comb and clips around the perimeter. A hair topper is generally worn by those with partial hair loss, such as androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, telegenic effluvium or general thinning. A topper clips into existing hair and comes in three sizes depending on your area of hair loss or density you prefer.

What is a wig?

A wig offers a full hair coverage to the whole head, and sits at the edge of the hairline all the way around the head. Wigs can be worn both by those who have full hair loss or those with partial hair loss. Wigs can be secured with clips and combs (for those with existing hair), a velvet or silicone wig grip, or glue/tape. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to figure out which option is most comfortable for you!

Do I have to have to wear a specific topper or wig depending on my hair loss?

The only instance that this applies is that for wearing a topper, you do need some existing hair to clip into- but other than that, no! When choosing the right option, it’s important to first consider your desired outcome, which will be different for everybody. For example, two people with the exact same area of hair loss could be looking to achieve very different outcomes, so there isn’t necessarily a one size fits all option when it comes to which size or construction to choose!

When should I wear and remove my topper or wig?

Wildflower pieces can be worn daily but should be removed before sleeping or showering, this will both allow your own hair to breathe and also reduce the damage to your wig or topper. Wildflower pieces only need to be washed every couple of weeks, so over washing will strip the hair and cause damage. They are also made from delicate materials, so sleeping in them may lead to friction resulting in shedding and hair breakage.

How does Wildflower work?

Wildflower is currently a one woman show! I work with a specialist manufacturer to produce my pieces, and then I cut, color and customize each piece. I put around five to ten hours of personalization (making each piece look and feel as natural as possible!) into each topper or wig and list in small quantities every couple of weeks. Each stock upload I try to include a variety of lengths, sizes and colors. You can keep up with me between uploads at @wildflowerhairuk on instagram, where I post details of new stock and listing dates ahead of time, as well as lots of helpful tips, tricks and tutorials.
