Silk top toppers clip into existing hair so are great for partial hair loss. They are available in sizes 7x7”inch, 8x8” inch and 9x9” inch. The inch measurement is the cross section from the hairline towards the back of the head and across the middle of the head.
A 7x7” offers a good coverage to the front and sides of the hair and a medium coverage to the back of the hair.
An 8x8” offers a good coverage to the front, sides and back of the hair,
A 9x9” offers a full coverage to the front, sides and back of the hair.
With each size topper, the area in which it is clipped is completely covered by the cap, and the hairs within the topper provide a layer over the top of existing hair. Toppers are therefore amazing for those with thinning in the scalp area or just general diffuse thinning. as they will provide coverage where you need it most.
A silk top refers to the construction of the 4x4” inch ‘top’ of the topper, which covers four inches across the hairline and four inches back and creates the part line. Within this section, there are thousands of hairs that have been skillfully, individually hand tied into layers of silk for the most realistic scalp. This scalp can be parted anywhere within the four inch section, allowing for middle and side parts. Bangs can also be added to silk toppers. At Wildflower, I offer a free bang cutting service here.
The silk top construction is the same on each cap size topper, but the weft area gets bigger with each size up. The weft area is a lightweight, breathable mesh made up of rows of hairs. It has a light stretch and is comfortable against the scalp. The more rows of hairs, the bigger the coverage on the head, and in turn the more hair density.
When choosing the right size topper it can be helpful to measure your area of hair loss and choose a cap size that is bigger, so it will clip outside of any areas you may experience sensitivity.
For toppers, you also have to consider the length of your existing hair. Using a tape measure, you can measure your hair in inches from the middle of your head down to the ends, and compare that to the measurements on the listings in the shop section.
